On the 1st of August, we were irrigating – the fields were dry and the vegetables suffering. Weeds had come up in abundance due to a very heavy rainfall early morning on the dark moon of July 13th and after a few minor rains up until the 20th, it was dry.

The first 3 weeks of June were a continuation of the horrendous heat wave that India has experienced this year. Then out of the blue, a very strong wind started to blow day and night, and finally on the night of the 24th, around 10pm, we received the first significant rainfall that we have had for 10 months.

Here in Jadan the mercury reached 48.5 Celsius on the 28th May and 48.4 on the 29th. By the 30th of this month the death toll from heat in Pakistan was officially 65 and there have been more than 1000 deaths in India to date.

The temperature and gentle climate of February and March in the semi-arid zone of Pali District has slowly come to an end and the mercury has climbed to 40 degrees celsius and even beyond.

We had a maximum temperature of 38.3 degrees celsius this month and it felt very very bright and hot. We have not had a drop of rain since late August last year – so six dry months are behind us and the heat of the summer is showing signs of approaching.

The month of November in Jadan Ashram always feels like a gift or reward for surviving yet another hot season and then again the post monsoon 'second summer' of September and October.

Most of October is pretty hot in this semi-arid area of Rajasthan – temperatures can reach up to 40 C degrees, so the winter planting season is not possible until the last week in the month, with the exception of the Brassica family and radishes like daikon (mooli) which we planted on the 12th along with pak choy, roquette and endive, and European sunflower seed.

Not a drop of sweet rain did we receive from the heavens, except very fine drops on the 16th and that lasted all of 5 mins, after a morning of heavy cloud and humidity.

Right on cue, the rains turned off on the last day of July and our cultivated areas started to dry out.
